Technology CAN be your friend

by Katrina on September 14, 2010

I work in a technology-related field, and I am consistently disappointed by how the same technology that is supposed to liberate us often ends up enslaving us. Smart phones, lap tops, and social media have made it “possible” for many of us to work all the time.

Gee, thanks.

So today, I’m logging into my Google calendar and I see a message about setting your working hours. I poked around a little and found this cool new feature:

Finally, technology that aims to protect our time instead of devouring it! The geeky-designer-working-mom in me is positively giddy.

Have you used it yet? What do you think?

This is a nice feature. Now the only thing a busy mom has to do is keep her calendar updated. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I looked into it a little more and it sounds like Google is now working on making the feature more flexible since we all have complicated lives, and “work hours” may be different on different days.

And then, of course, there’s the problem of the people you work with respecting what the calendar tells them, but that warning message can only help.

This is very cool. Must have been suggested by a woman.

Ha! Or maybe Google employees are getting sick of working all those long hours themselves…
