I’m taking this week off to be with the family. Looking forward to birds, trees, mountains, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, starry nights, and no cell phone reception. If you’re looking for inspiration to unplug for a few days (or longer!), check out these New York Times stories: “Hooked on Gadgets and Paying a Mental Price” (6/6/10) [...]

I try to make sure our kids have equal access to fairy wands and toy trucks, and when Ruby dresses Jake in a princess dress, everyone (including Jake, for the first five minutes, anyway) thinks it’s cool. But Jake still gravitates to the trucks, balls, and tools, whereas Ruby and Martha, until recently, lived in Princess Central. Have we failed in our gender-neutral conditioning?
